After the Roman empire had split, the Germanic tribes kept weakening the West Roman Empire by a series of brutal attacks. In A.D. 410, the Visigoths marched into Italy and looted the city of Rome. In A.D. 455, Rome was ravaged by the Vandals. By A.D. 476 Rome had fallen when Odoacer, the German Chieftain forced Romulus Augustus from the throne. A.D. 476 officially marks the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.
