When did Diamond mining begin in Africa?

In 1867, a “pretty pebble” was discovered along the banks of the Orange river in South Africa, this led to the finding of a rich diamond field near present day Kimberley. By 1880 the British and the Boers both claimed the Kimberley area, leading to tensions between both sides which started the first Boer War.
