VCR also known as videocassette recorders, were introduced by Sony in 1975. The VCR was first introduced when the Japanese company debuted its Betamax, which was a small home videocorder . Because of formatting issues the high per-unit cost to the average consumer, sales of the VCR were not so successful at first. Soon the formatting issue had been resolved and the prices had been adjusted to the affordable rate of the average consumer, the VCR sales soon began to skyrocket. At the beginning of the 1980’s only 1 % of the average American household owned a VCR, by the end of that decade the figure had shot up to 70%.
